Oral Hygiene With Braces

The braces installed in your mouth by Dr. Aaron Miyai at Hawaii Smile Designs, have been designed to gradually realign your teeth. Without the tension applied by your routine adjustments, uncorrected alignment issues could leave you with an unappealing smile and damaged tooth enamel.

While your braces are in place, you will need to practice very good oral hygiene. Complications and treatment from tooth decay could potentially increase the duration of the realignment process. If you’re having issues cleaning around some of the braces hardware, you might want to try using special oral hygiene tools.

You might find it easier to remove plaque and food particles from around wires and brackets with an interdental brush. Most designs have small, angled brush heads that can work into tight places that your regular toothbrush cannot. These are especially handy for getting small food particles out of bands and spacers.

Some individuals with braces might find hard to floss into the gum line around wires. In a situation like this, a floss threader loaded with waxed dental floss can help you easily insert the strand between teeth as well as around wires.
