A Fixed Retainer Can Help Corrected Teeth Hold Their Position

Traditional braces employ a dynamic system of brackets, wires and other components designed to gradually correct misaligned teeth. They are often the ideal option for addressing overcrowded teeth, as well as a pronounced underbite or overbite.

After our orthodontists installs the braces components you will need to return to Hawaii Smile Designs for periodic adjustment appointments. These sessions will gradually tension the braces to gradually affect their orientation.

After your teeth have achieved their ideal alignment Dr. Aaron Miyai can remove the components from your mouth. Yet there will still be some residual tension in the periodontal ligaments that hold your teeth in their periodontal sockets. If it’s not addressed by a retainer, the corrected could eventually start to relapse out of their new position.

A removable Hawley retainer is the most common option for maintaining the corrected alignment of your upper teeth. The custom-shaped oral appliance will conform to the unique shape and contours of your mouth.

If two or more teeth in a specific area required significant correction our orthodontists might also need to install an additional fixed retainer. It is a rigid metal band that will be cemented behind the teeth to lock them in their new position while any lingering tension in the periodontal ligaments gradually dissipates.

If you live in Hawaii and you have pronounced alignment issues with your teeth, contact us today to set up a braces consultation.
