What to Do if Your Braces Break?
When people think of braces, they often think of money. Because of that, if your braces become damaged, you may be tempted to panic, and worry that you are looking at an expensive fix and that your smile in jeopardy. First, take a deep breath and relax. In most cases damage to your braces is minor.
But, you should still contact your orthodontists if you do have a problem. Your orthodontists may want to see you right away, or you might be able to wait until your next appointment.
A common problem is a broken wire. If that happens, try pushing it back into place, and covering it with dental wax if it is irritating your mouth. The jury is still out on cutting a broken wire. Some people recommend it, while others warn that you could accidentally inhale or swallow the broken piece.
Before cutting a broken wire, ask your orthodontists what they wants you to do. If a bracket is loose, cover it with dental wax, and leave it alone. If you have a loose band, your orthodontists need to cement it back in place or give you a new one. If it falls out, bring it with you to your appointment. If you have a spacer fall out, it may surprise you, but don’t get too upset. Usually, this is just an indicator that it is time to place a band.
Of course, not damaging your braces is the best course of action. This means avoiding tough, hard or sticky food, and not chewing on things like pens or pencils.
But life happens, and when it does, you need to call your orthodontists. If the time has come for you to think about braces, our orthodontists will be happy to see you for a consultation. Contact us to make an appointment at Hawaii Smile Designs today.
